Join us for Last Friday TONIGHT!
Happy Friday! What a week -- we'll catch you up later about what we've been up to. For now, we want to encourage you to attend our open house tonight as part of Maryville's Last Friday Art Walk. We are proudly hosting the paintings of John Coykendall, Master Gardener and artis extraordinaire! We hung the show last night and it's awesome. Please stop by to see the work and meet the artist. We're delighted that the Spurgeon Boys will be playing some bluegrass for us. And of course the Photo Booth will be in full swing. We look forward to seeing you tonight!
Happy Spring!
Hello friends! Happy spring! We're so glad spring is finally here. East Tennessee has the most beautiful flowering trees, tulips, daffodils, and bright green new leaves growing in on once bare trees. After a long, wet, cold winter, we welcome more sunshine and color! This week has been busy for us catching up on old projects, planning for future ones, and shooting some new images for Landscape Architect, Sara Hedstrom of HEDSTROM DESIGN (www.hedstromdesign.com). Yesterday we photographed 3 of her projects around the Knoxville area. With blue skies and 70 degree temperatures, we couldn't have thought of a better way to spend the day! Sara is so talented and diverse in her skills, from big development projects to community spaces to private homes, she can truly do it all. Thanks for welcoming spring with us, Sara.
Introducing Jason Baker, the fiddle player
Introducing our friend and favorite fiddle player, Jason Baker (www.fiddle-player.com). We've photographed Jason a few times for other clients and when we started hosting an open house at our studio, we knew we wanted him to play at our party! We were so grateful when he accepted our invitation and played at our last open house in March. Children were dancing, adults were clapping, and old timers reminisced about simpler times. And we, the beall + thomas team, hosted and photographed, mesmerized by the beautiful music and cheerful persona of our friend, the fiddler. So, mark your calendars now! Jason will be back for our April open house, Friday April 25th from 5:30 - 8:30 right here in our studio. We'll also be featuring the paintings and drawings of John Coykendall -- more to come on that. Jason is amazing -- come out and enjoy the talented folks that call east Tennessee home!
Chef Grant Achatz
Yesterday we photographed Chef Grant Achatz. He is the real deal. Wow. Star Chef, Restauranteur, Cancer Survivor, kind and generous person, hard worker, LEADER. His food was playful, not pretentious. And FUN. And did we mention how good it tasted? Short ribs in the style of root beer, how inspired! Thank you for letting us photograph you, Chef Achatz. You brought smiles to our faces. We wish you well and continued success and good health.
Sfumato and George Krasue
We had the great privilege to be photographed by George Krause while we were participating in the Meeting Place at FotoFest this week. Mr. Krause is a legendary photographer and educator. His Sfumato Portraits are intense -- a perfect mix of technique and communication between the artist and the subject. The images are taken with a 4x5 vew camera and the subject is illuminated from behind the head using a specially made light box (see iPhone photo illustration to the left). It is an amazing technique that allows the principal features of the sitter to be in shadow and the secondary features to be illuminated -- quite the opposite of modern convention. The effect is breathtaking and follows in the post-Renaissance idea that the head can stand for and convey the essence of the person. Thank you, Mr. Krause. It was a great pleasure to meet you and a great honor to be photographed by you.
FotoFest: The Meeting Place
We arrived in Houston on Wednesday to participate in the Meeting Place, a portfolio review session. FotoFest is an International Biennial of photography held in Houston, Texas. It was started in 1983 by documentary photographers and journalists, Frederick Baldwin and Wendy Watriss. The first biennial was held in 1986. During this month long celebration of photography, Houston comes alive with exhibitions and photography enthusiasts. Every gallery and bank lobby and museum and warehouse in this city are filled with photography. We've seen provocative work from China, brave work from the middle East, and new work from emerging artists around the globe. We are humbled to be here and have been incredibly inspired by the people we have met and the work we have seen. We're especially impressed with Ms. Watriss and her vision and commitment to this festival. To create a place and a culture that promotes exploration, discovery, and exchange of art and ideas is truly inspiring. We came here to push our edge a little bit and see what's going on out there. We are happy to report photography is alive and well. We leave inspired to return home and create new and better work -- stay tuned! Thanks to all the volunteers that make FotoFest possible. Thanks also to the new friends we've made here, your work is remarkable, thank you for sharing.
Charleston Cooks!
Monday and Tuesday we were in Charleston, SC for a photo shoot about Charleston Cooks! It's a locally owned cooking shop and cooking school in Charleston. We photographed the story for TRADITIONAL HOME and look forward to seeing the images in their June/July issue. We had the pleasure of working with Jo Ann McVicker from the magazine. She is an amazing photo editor and art director. We appreciated her enthusiasm, focus, and direction -- she knows what she wants! We also enjoyed the entire team from Maverick Kitchens -- wow! What a talented group. Laura Bright of their marketing department was a lovely and gracious host and Emily and Danielle (the cooking instructors) were lovely! We couldn't have picked more animated chefs from central casting. Thanks to all for their hospitality. If you get to Charleston, please stop in and say hello, take a class -- learn about low country cooking. Also, check out one of their restaurants -- we loved the meals we had at High Cotton and Slightly North of Broad (S.N.O.B.).
